No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean, wrap-around,glossy,navy blue background with slightly sunned/faded spine/backstrip and capitalised red-lettered title and author name with capitalised,white-lettered sub-title to fron of dw/dj; spine/backstrip with faded red capitalised part-title,capitalised white-lettered author name and capitalised,white-lettered publisher's name to foot of same, rear panel of dw/dj with a critic's single white-lettered review. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners – no major, tears or splits present but age-acquired, superficial scoring/indents without any penetration to boards beneath.Top edges aged/toned with minimal, faint, sporadic dust flecks,fore-edges slightly brighter and clean with very minimal foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound – no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips – appears unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean/unblemished,sharp-cornered,original plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettering to spine/backstrip,and near immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,9-255pp [paginated] includes a Prologue18 chapters,an Epilogue,a Note on Sources; plus [unpaginated] a blank with publisher's previous published title to its reverse,a title page,a dedication, and an epigram. Visually the exterior appearance is [more than acceptable] exceptional and even/particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 35+ year-old age. It is only the minimal faults described, that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite them it really is still an exceptional copy for its cleanliness, and lack of other detracting faults. Author's fascinating account is the first ever to tell the story of this remarkable World War II journey. In May of 1940,more than 500 Jews crowded aborad a decrepit paddle steamer, captained by a one-legged morphine addict,to begin one of the most remarkable journeys in modern history.A journey that should have taken them a month. It took four years. For many of the passengers, the voyage from Czechoslovakia was not mere flight but the pursuit of a dream - the dream of reaching Palestine, the Promised Land. For others, already robbed of their possessions and driven from their homes,it was the last chance to escape the impending Holocaust.Against almost insurmountable odds - political red tape, shipwreck, near starvation and internment - they gambled their lives for freedom. And won. Based on the recollections of the passengers themselves, illustrated by photographs taken during the voyage. 'Odyssey' is a vivid re-creation of their bravery and determination,a triumphant celebration of the human spirit.
