FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., 46pp(i)., original printed wrappers, a genuine, complete copy, inscribed the author "John Leicester Warren with the respect of C. Patmore" at head of title, internally clean and bright, general handling to covers, spine with inked title, VERY GOOD, housed in cloth chemise. Hayward 264. "'The first appearance of some of... Patmore's most important work. Only 250 copies were privately printed, of which Patmore, having sent some out privately, destroyed over a hundred of the remainder.'" The recipient of this copy, John Warren, 3rd Baron de Tabley (1835-1895) was a poet, botanist, numismatist and authority on bookplates.

The rare 1877 first edition sumptuously bound by Tout in full crushed brown morocco, five raised bands with gilt lettering on spine and attractive gilt acorn border design dentelles, attractive brightly colored marbled and glossy endpapers, all edges gilt, side edges trimmed with a bow. Patmore's scarce anonymously printed first edition, first issue bound with both blank pages (before half-title and after printer's mark at end). The book contains Patmore's most acclaimed poetry, including Patmore's most anthologized poem, "The Toys." With the bookplate of Barbara de Selincourt, a figure in royalty whose portrait was painted by the famous Herbert James Draper. A stunning, fine copy.

ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED, TO JOHN RUSKIN ON A SHEET TIPPED-IN ("John Ruskin | with Coventry Patmore's | affectionate regards"). As well, there is a note on upper paste-down "From John Ruskin's Oxford Library 1880"), 10pp. separately paginated poems at the end with divisional title. With bookplate of Lewis Kennedy Morse, author. Paper label, slightly rubbed, spine faded, upper hinge slightly cracked, some offsetting, very good. Patmore's friendship with Ruskin is well-documented, sometimes heated, but always co-allies in the arts. Ruskin greatly admired Patmore's poetry, especially those presented in The Angel in the House.
