London: Longman, Green and Company, 1886. Leather bound. Very good. 8vo; xi [i] 396pp; half bound in pebbled navy leather with 5 raised bands on the spine, marbled boards and gilt stamping; marbled endpapers with a booklet of Claud Lambton on the front pastedown; all edges marbled; 9 engraved illustrations including the frontispiece and title page; shelf scuffing to edges of cover, sunning and shelf dirt to top edge, binding tight and pages bright; very good. Bookplate belonging to Claud Lambton (1888-1976) on front pastedown. Lambton became the Director of the William and Morris, now the Morris & Co., design firm in 1905. A wonderful fanciful bookplate with his signature ram's head. A personal account of a round the world inspection of some of England's holdings including Australia, New Zealand, the Cape Colony as well as their climates, geography, resources and government, and ''management of the races.'' Also included is a discourse of America and the effects of the American civil war.
