First edition. 16mo. 16.8 x 11 cm (6 5/8" x 4 1/4") original brown cloth, titles stamped in gilt 0n the front cover, brown front and rear endpapers, 32 pp., folding map bound-in at the front, advertisement for "Absaraka" at the rear. A rare emigrant guide to Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, California, Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming. These Territories were made accessible by the completion of the Pacific Railroad. Information on snows, eating houses, the railroad track, equipment used for passenger comfort while traveling, Indians, the scenery, the climate, etc. Graff 598 says "Although authorship is attributed to Mrs. Carrington, the General probably wrote this little guide." This is a rare item and we have had only a few copies over the years, Covers lightly rubbed, a small tear to the bottom margin of the map, else a very good copy housed in a leatherette clamshell case with titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine.
