About This Item

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1959. First Edition. A very good copy in a good publisher’s slipcase, which has some staining and wear. This is an exceptional association copy, inscribed by both the photographer and author to Kenneth [Battelle], known as the hairdresser to celebrities, Mr. Kenneth. Inscribed by Avedon, “For Kenneth with admiration and affection,” and by Capote, “For Kenneth, an artist, from Truman C.” Kenneth was known for collaborating with contemporary photographers such as Avedon and Irving Penn. He was the favored hairdresser of both Jackie Kennedy Onassis and her sister, as well as others, preparing many for the famous (infamous? notorious? celebrated?) Black & White Ball, the lavish party staged by Capote.
