About This Item
New York: New York Times Book Manufacturers' Institute, 1937. Hardcover. Very Good. Very Good blue hardcover with gilt lettering and decoration to cover, in Good dustjacket. The hardcover has some sun fading to spine, but otherwise is a good clean copy. The dustjacket has some wear to the top edge and is discolored in the spin area. The dustjacket depicting the Book Fair of 1537 in any mediaeval town, was printed in two colors by Mortimer & Walling NY, from plates by Chromatic Photo Engraving Company NY. "without the humble Donatuses of Haarlem we should never have had the wonderful Bible of 36 lines: and without the preserving and fruitful efforts of Gutenberg during the ten years 1440 to 1450, mainkind would never have been blessed with that art which his creative genius ad raised to a perfection which leaves far behind the first and necessarily imperfect attempts of Coster. In a word: Coster gave us Gutenberg, and Gutenberg has given us typography.
