From a contemporary news clipping: ''The Rather Press, printers and publishers of limited editions from a small printshop in their Guido Street home here in Oakland, have come up with what they introduce as practically the first history of Oakland to be produced in this century. Lois Rather is the resident historian of the new 162 page history. She was also layout artist and bookbinder. Her husband Clifton was typesetter and pressman. Of the two dozen or more books produced at Rather Press, this is the largest. This dwells on the land, first inhabitants, first immigrants, this Arcadia, birth pangs, and form and reform.''
