[294] pp. total, signed by the authors, 6 of 7 volumes with a signed and numbered print from the illustrator. The "First Chapter Series" was launched in 2006, with the publication of Oak Tree Fine Press's first ever book, "The Life and Times of Michael K," illustrated in black and white by South African artist Colbert Mashile. The support of Nobel Prize winner J. M. Coetzee has been vital to the success of the series, and its second volume featured his Booker Prize winning novel of 1999, "Disgrace." Since then, a wide range of authors have collaborated on the series, linked by their shared status as Booker Prize winners, and their mutual interest in contributing to a worthwhile cause through the creation of beautiful and thought provoking book.

Each book is comprised of the first chapter of the title, accompanied by an illustration made especially for the series. All proceeds from the original sales were targeted at organizations which offer support to the child victims of the African HIV/AIDS crisis. Originally featuring designs by up and coming authors, the series has expanded to include signed works by some of our greatest living artists. In each volume, the images offer an acutely relevant and valuable perspective on the themes and styles of these inspiring literary works. "Holiday" is illustrated by the author, Stanley Middleton, "The Conservationist" by Nadine Gordimer is illustrated with etchings by Cyril Coetzee, "Sacred Hunger" by Barry Unsworth is illustrated with woodcuts by Ezequiel Mabote, "The Blind Assassin" by Margaret Atwood is illustrated with an ink drawing by Yoko Ono, and "The Line of Beauty" by Alan Hollinghurst is illustrated with artwork by Gilbert and George. Volumes 1-4, 6-7 have a signed and numbered print from the respective artist. Volumes 1-3 have a presentation card from the publisher slipped in.
