About This Item

Near fine condition; cover shows some foxing (extensive on the back wrapper) and creasing across corners; internally foxing throughout the book (mainly on the outer corners).

The first Latvian translation of Sinclair's novel "The Metropolis" (Latvian edition) with striking avant-garde cover design by S. Vidbergs.

Set in the exciting scene of New York city in 1907, the Metropolis depicts a duality by showing both the glamourous and obscene lifestyle of the rich and the desolate, difficult life of the poor and working class. This contrast describes the cruelty of the rich, often making the poor victims to their greed and selfishness.

Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was a famous American writer. Though he wrote across many genres, Sinclair's most famous works were novels of social protest and political tracts.

Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890-1970) was an outstanding Latvian graphic artist, member of the Riga Artists' Group (1921- 1925) and Riga Graphic Artists' Association. Until the 1920s he was close to modernist art style, later bacame influenced by art-deco.
