About This Item

Basel, Ludwig König, 1614. Title printed in red and black. With engr. title border, and 20 large engravings (1 full-page). 67 (i.e. 71) pp. Small 4to. 19th-century half morocco (paper cover renewed). Basel, Ludwig König, 1614. Zubler (1563-1609) was an instrument maker and mathematician in Zurich, who closely examined the central perpective and constructed corresponding instruments, some of which were the forerunners of Bramer's measuring instruments. He describes an important surveying instrument of his invention, "one of the earliest triangulation instruments" (Kiely). Zinner records that examples of Zubler's instrument are kept at the Germanisches National Museum, Nuremberg, and at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. The full-page plate shows all the details of the measuring instruments, while the other illustrations shows meauring processes and also the military importance of surveying, e.g. to find the range for artillery. The plates are identical in the first ed. from 1607 and the present 1614 edition, which both mistakenly mention 22 illustrations in the title, and both claim to be published for the first time. The text was written in German, there was also a Latin version by Caspar Waser (1607). - Faint library stamp on title, somewhat cropped at head, some pages rehinged. - VD 17 39:121596B; Cockle 949; Berlin Katalog 1713 (the 1607 ed.); Poggendorff II, 1420; Kiely, Surveying Instruments, 224-226, 328-232 (reprod. of 3 of the plates); Zinner, Instrumente, 597.
