The first edition, first impression, in the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrapper. This is the first work of fiction by Florence Margaret Smith, known as Stevie Smith, told through a series of random typings by a bored secretary named Pompey. Her flights of imagination examine Euripedes, sex education, Nazi Germany and the Catholic Church. After expressing an anti-Semitic sentiment early on in the novel, Pompey later visits Germany as the Nazis are gaining power, and acknowledges the continuity between her feelings and the madness overtaking Germany. With eight pages of advertisements to the rear of the work. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with price unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, bright. Bumping to spine head and tail, with spotting to boards. Discolouration to dust wrapper back strip, with light marks to rear wrap. Loss to back strip head, with minor chipping to back strip tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good
