About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1936. First edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8" by 5". None. A first edition copy of Smith's first novel, in the scarce original clipped dust wrapper. First Edition. In the original clipped dust wrapper. This is the first work of fiction by Stevie Smith, told through a series of random typings by a bored secretary named Pompey. In most of Smith's novels, there is a scene where the heroine expresses feelings that are regretted later, which is, in this case, anti-Semitic sentiment. Pompey later visits Germany as the Nazis are gaining power, and relates this experience alongside reminiscences on a series of failed relationships. Stevie Smith (1902-1971) was an English poet and novelist. She won both the Cholmondeley Award, as well as the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. Eight pages of publisher's adverts to rear of text.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original clipped dust wrapper. Externally, generally smart. Marks and light spotting to boards, particularly the margins, with discolouration along the top edge as well. Very light bumping to extremities and spine. Light spotting to text block. Dust wrapper is generally smart with a few marks to wraps and light age-toning to wraps, including the reverse and top edge of fly leaves. Some chipping to the top edge around the spine region, with a closed tear to the rear wrap. Age-toned discolouration to spine region. Light spots to the reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to pages. Very Good
