About This Item

Karslake & Co., London, first edition, 1909. Cloth, small 4to,. xvi, (vi), 392, xvii-xxvi pp. 2,032 entries. In a leaflet publicising the book to the book trade Karslake wrote: "..the work was a labour of love, done because I saw that it ought to be done and not caring very much whether it paid or not, but because my experience in bookselling showed me that Sotheby’s catalogues contained a mine of hidden wealth which only required digging out for it to be of immense service to every seller of books’. The volume consisted of particularly detailed descriptions of some two thousand major books and manuscripts sold by the firm between 1885 and 1909." - quoted by Frank Herrmann in his "Sotheby-s - Portrait of an Auction House".
