Aquasi-documentary log of a visit by the author to an Israeli kibbutz, a few miles from the Syrian border, in the summer of 1965 and in the last days of the June war--which states a few new variables and poses some questions. The members of the kibbutz are, in these portraits, familiar to the informed in background, variety and degree of dedication. Although the inevitable muffling of any downbeat elements may oversimplify some of the portraits, the highly skillful juxtaposition of events and crosscurrents in the community emphasizes the main concern with contemporary problems. The presence in the kibbutz of the Saba, an elder solemnly lighting his Sabbath candles in a mainly atheistic community while the intellectuals and leaders thrash out the problems of Jewish destiny; the backbreaking toil in the fields while modern cities are evolving nearby; the battering by Syrian guns while a historian searches out patterns in the regions' and mankind's violent, sometimes circular, progress--all indicate the struggle of a unique experiment in communistic-democratic living to survive and contribute. The brief account of the author's view of the war and its effect on the kibbutz reinforces the impression of the kibbutzim as a people of extraordinary determination, pride and resilience. An informative and accomplished corollary to books on the war and modern Israel. Syrian Border Kibbutz
