London: Fortune Press, 1945. First Edition. First Edition stated. Black cloth lettered in gold; small 8vo. 36 pp. Mark Schorer's copy with his attractive bookplate (Ruth & Mark Schorer) on the pastedown. One of fewer than 500 copies. Largely unopened, with trace foxing, bookplate glue showing through, trace foxing, still a near fine copy of the poet's scarce first book; lacking the dust jacket. Bloomfield A1a. Mark Schorer was a leading critic (Sinclair Lewis and D. H. Lawrence) and writer and a contemporary of Larkin. He was for many years head of The English Dept. at U C Berkeley, and taught a course on modern British literature.

Synopsis

The North Ship, Philip Larkin's earliest volume of verse, was first published in August 1945. The introduction, by Larkin himself, explains the circumstances of its publication and the influences which shaped its contents.
