About This Item
New York: Solomon King, 1830. 16mo. (16)pp. Frontispiece, title-page vignette, and eight small illustrations throughout from wood engravings. The text begins by presenting a scaled-back version of Jack the Giant Killer, though misattributing the identity of Jack's first victim, noted here as "Giant Grumbo" felled by a pick-axe blow after being lured into a deep pit outside his castle gate. The actual Cornish giant slain was named Cormoran. The text also references other giants from various nations' folklore, including Giant Gruffe from France; Ireland's Ben the Big, and the gentle Giant Dondero from Spain. The final giant described here is named Mumbo, who simply lives "in a wood" and whose claim to fame is that he eats "all the boys and girls he could"—certainly an effective way to discourage children from wandering alone in nature. Rare: this title bearing the King imprint is known in four institutional holdings. Ink ownership inscription dated 1830 on title page, scattered light foxing, else fine in equally fine, bright orange printed wrappers.
