About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz, 1934. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A scarce first edition of one of Sayers' most loved novels, featuring her protagonist, Lord Peter Wimsey. The first edition, first impression. Lacking the very scarce original dust wrapper. The Nine Tailors is the ninth novel to feature Lord Peter Wimsey and is set in the Lincolnshire Fens, with the story concerning a group of bell-ringers at the local parish church. Widely considered her best work, Sayers can perhaps be forgiven for the minor criticism regarding her inaccurate campanology details. Sayers was a prolific author of crime fiction during the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, and one of the 'Queens of Crime', alongside notable others such as Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh. A smart copy of Sayers' finest literary achievement. In the original black cloth binding. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the boards. Lifting to backstrip. Slight bumping to the extremities. Contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. with just marginal age toning due to paper used. Very Good

Synopsis

The Nine Tailors is Dorothy L. Sayers's finest mystery, featuring Lord Peter Whimsey, and a classic of the genre.   The nine tellerstrokes from the belfry of an ancient country church toll out the death of an unknown man and call the famous Lord Peter Whimsey to investigate the good and evil that lurks in every person. Steeped in the atmosphere of a quiet parish in the strange, flat fen-country of East Anglia, this is a tale of suspense, character, and mood by an author critics and readers rate as one of the great masters of the mystery novel.
