About This Item
Dedicated to both his agent, Dorothy Olding, and his editor at the New Yorker, Gus Lobrano, Salinger's second book is presented here in the first Modern Library edition. Alfred Kazin's copy, with his signature ("A. Kazin") in pencil on the half-title. Kazin contributed underscoring and marginalia throughout, the latter being mostly hash-marks, with a comment or two.
Following this collection, Salinger's output was tantamount to logorrhea, unchecked by his editor, William Shawn, following the death of Gus Lobrano, the uncredited New Yorker editor who created Salinger.
We don't know if Kazin reviewed Nine Stories, but he was forthright in criticizing Salinger's subsequent effusion. Here's a charitable view: "I am sorry to have to use the word 'cute' in respect to Salinger," Kazin wrote, "but there is absolutely no other word that for me so accurately typifies the self-conscious charm and prankishness of his own writing and his extraordinary cherishing of his favorite Glass characters." In sum, a fine association of figures vitally influential in modern American literature.
