About This Item

London, 1868. 596pp. Portrait frontispiece plus 22 plates and 2 partially colored maps of the author's routes (1 folding). Contemporary morocco, expertly rebacked with gilt spine in matching style. Insect damage to face of back cover. Internally clean and very good. Second edition of this account of travel and hunting adventures along the Nile tributaries, a sort of sequel to the author's THE ALBERT N'YANZA BASIN OF THE NILE (1866). Baker, one of the great explorers of central Africa in search of the source of the Nile, offers observations on the natural history, topography, and inhabitants of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). Hunting episodes with the crocodile, hippopotamus, giraffe, elephant, rhinoceros and gazelle. The author had earlier toured Ceylon in 1845 and settled there for a time. One map depicts Sir Baker's routes and discoveries along the Nile, and the other shows his routes on the Nile tributaries of Abyssinia
