New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1937. First Edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First American edition, first printing. Bound in publisher's original dark blue cloth with spine lettered in gilt and top edge stained fuchsia. Near Fine with slight lean to binding, fading to cloth at spine ends, a few spots to the fore edge and contents tanned. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with toning to the spine, light wear at the extremities including a scrape to the front flap fold and faint vertical creasing to the front panel.
An early example of lesbian literature, with explicit depiction of homosexuality between women. A modernist novel with gothic prose, it was praised by T.S. Eliot, who wrote the introduction which was first published in this edition. Scarce in jacket.
Synopsis
Nightwood is a 1936 novel by Djuna Barnes first published in London by Faber and Faber. An edition published in the United States in 1937 by Harcourt, Brace included an introduction by T. S. Eliot.. Author Charles Henri Ford typed an early version of the manuscript for Barnes during the summer of 1932, and it took Barnes several years to find a publisher. Nightwood is one of the first lesbian novels (or, for that matter, homosexual novels) to be published.
