The Nightless City, or The History of the Yoshiwara Yukwaku, Yokohama: Maruya & Co., 1899. Octavo, first edition, pp. v, 441, xix (appendix), 3 (sheet music), red cloth boards with beveled edges and gilt lettering, stamped gilt and black image of two ladies of the night on front cover, 20 plates including 5 folding color prints on japan, other color plates, 2 double-page photogravures, text in English. Includes two pages of sheet music to the Kappore Dance. One halftone plate is loose, but present. The author, who identifies himself only as "an English student of sociology," covers practices of a long-standing red-light district under government control. Scarce, especially in attractive condition. Condition of this book: Very good with a chip at the top edge of the front cover, else minor wear at extremities. Split in rear pastedown exposes webbing, but hinge is sound. Bright, attractive copy. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is loose but fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1.
