When Manuel's mother reports her husband's disappearance to the army, she is told he never existed. Then comes the warning in the night: Manuel's mother and older brother are under suspicion, too. The family must flee. Hiding and finding shelter wherever possible on their journey north (to Canada), Manuel is haunted by the ghosts of his father and two street children, and tormented by the legendary Lords of Xibalba, the Land of Death described in the ancient book of Mayan mythology, the Popul Vuh.
