About This Item

[New York]: Harper & Row, Publishers [1970], 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 4to. Unpaginated. Beige cloth with a decoration in brown, yellow, white and blue, lettered in red on the front board. Each page illustrated with bright and bold color drawings by Sendak. Baumgarten 191. Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, "Case Study: In the Night Kitchen". Hanrahan A75. This publication by Sendak experienced heavy censorship, book burning, and banning. Librarians and parents were upset by Mickey, the protagonist, being depicted in the nude. Librarians would draw diapers over the pictures, some schools banned the book, and some even went as far as burning the book. Even today it remains controversial, and is ranked 25th on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list compiled by the American Library Association. It won the Caldecott Honor Award in 1971. A Very Good book with two color pencil marks on the front board and four tiny spots of discoloration from handling on the rear board; dust jacket is price-clipped with a few traces of edge wear.
