Author Elie Wiesel wrote an autobiographical novel about the story of a pious, Jewish teenager haunted by memories of the concentration camps - tormented not only by the horrors he had witnessed, including the death of his father, but by a profound guilt he had survived, while struggling with the terrible question "Where was God when evil seized the world?" He first wrote the novel in Yiddish, 800 pages long. He cut the manuscript by two thirds for publication and then two thirds again for the French version, which he called Night. He wrote like those in the death camps (short, choppy sentences). He wrote right-to-the point (trim, saying what is essential, what no others could say). His book was published in 1958. It became a best seller. Night is the starting place for the effort to understand and write about the Holocaust. Wiesel found not only his voice but also his "mission," according to the publisher.
