About This Item
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1972. In his preface, Bentley says he would like to "reflect the high moral tone of Charles and Mary Lamb's 'Tales from Shakespeare,'" whereupon he just happens to mention "murder, incest, illegitimacy, blackmail, transvestism, hallucinatory drugs, grievous bodily harm" which the Lambs failed to mention. Tongue-in-cheek work: "The perils of the social climber have never been more faithfully delineated than in `Macbeth'" and "It must be admitted that there are elements of improbability in a good many of Shakespeare's plots." Very good++ (giver's inscription; slightly rubbed white covers; several full-color plates are tipped in (by publisher) and one of them is loose but undamaged) in very good dust jacket (slightly faded, closed tears around jacket "cut-out" window have been repaired on back with tape; now protected in plastic cover).. 1st American edition. Hard Cover. Illus. by Nicolas Bentley.
