Octavo (20cm); brown paper-covered boards with titles stamped in gilt on spine; brown topstain; dustjacket; [6],7-350,[2]pp. Hint of offsetting to endpaper, else Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced 30s net), with a faint crease to upper front flap, a tiny tear to upper front panel, and a few faint foxed spots on verso; Near Fine. An attractive copy of the author's longest novel that was shortlisted for the 1969 Booker prize.

Synopsis

IRIS MURDOCH was born in Dublin in 1919 of Anglo-Irish parents. She went to Badminton School, Bristol, and read classics at Somerville College, Oxford. In 1948 she returned to Oxford where she became a fellow of St. Anne's college. Awarded the CBE in 1976, Iris Murdoch was made a DBE in the 1987 New Year's Honours List. She died in 1999.
