About This Item

Hartford, CT: Edwin Valentine Mitchell , 1926. Hardcover. Very Good. Very Good beige cloth hardcover, black label to cover with gilt lettering. Sun fading and discoloration to spine, bookplate of prior owner, inscription as gift dated 1926. Interior pages clean and unmarked. Referred to as the "King's Prison" in the annals of King John's reign, no one knows for sure when it was built but belief is that it was about 1066 during the Norman conquest. Men and women were interned for religious or political reasons and mixed with the worst of the criminal class. What suffering, what cruelty, what dirt and disease and depravity is in the tale with the title of Newgate Prison. The prison was used until about 1880, then destroyed in the early part of the 1900's. Each story starts with the moral of the story, then goes into the background of the convicted, their crime, and sentence. A fascinating read!
