Oxford, The Hakluyt Society, 1934, First edition by Hakluyt Society. . original cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt vignette on front cover, spine slightly faded, a clean fine copy, unmarked, gilt bright. . 8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; lxxi, 221 pp, 4 foldout plates, including foldout frontis of Wafer's handwriting & signature, 4 folding maps including 2 colored, index, the plates and maps mostly from early sources. . This is a reprint of the original edition of 1699 and is superior to other reprints, having more plates and maps. This edition includes an excellent historical and introduction The maps include Darien, Caribbean, Isthmus of Darien from Dampier, and chart of San Blas Islands and adjoining coast. For the original edition, Hill p. 313: "This work contains one of the best accounts of the Isthmus of Panama, of its natural resources, and of the native Indians". Cox II, 247: "This work contains the best account that has yet been given, of the Isthmus of Panama, of the Indians there, and of the natural products, and contains many interesting items". Sabin 100940. Field 1617. There are good sections on the native trees and fruit, and on the birds, insects, fish, animals, etc. A picture of this book is available on request by email.
