About This Item
London: Alston Rivers Ltd, 1906. No dustwrapper, some shelf wear to bottom edge, corners and spine ends of red cloth-covered boards, spine is slightly faded but gilt titles thereon are still bright, as are those on front board. Book smells slightly of pipe-tobacco, a previous owner's name and date (1918) on front page, otherwise a good tight copy of this hard-cover book containing eleven pieces by Thackeray originally written in the 1840s for the ''Foreign Quarterly Review''. They are ''The Rhine by Victor Hugo'', ''The German in England'', ''Celebrated Crimes by Alexandre Dumas'', ''Letters from Paris by Charles Gutzkow'', ''George Herwegh's Poems'', ''Balzac on the Newspapers of Paris'', ''English History and Character on the French Stage'', ''Sue's Mysteries of Paris'', ''French Romancers on England'', ''New Accounts of Paris'' and ''Angleterre''. Edited by Robert S Garnett. 324pp.. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
