A yellowback early edition of William Hurrell Mallock's satirical novel, mocking the important figures of Oxford University in the Victorian era, pulled from the author's own experiences at the University. An early edition of 'The New Republic', a yellowback cheap editionAdverts to the rear are dated May 1883. 'The New Republic' is a satirical novel in which the author, William Hurrell Mallock, pokes fun of the important figures of Oxford of the day; many of these figures appear in this novel with differently named characters, with inclusions being Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Thomas Huxley, John Ruskin, and more. One of the figures, Violet Fane, (pseudonym of Lady Mary Montgomerie Currie), is the dedicatee of this novel. First published in 1877, after appearing in serialised sketches in 'Belgravia' from June to December 1876.Mallock was educated at Oxford, publishing this novel only a few years after his graduation. In the original publisher's paper covered boards. Externally, a little worn. Loss to the head of the spine. Crack to the front joint, heavier to the head. Spine is a little discoloured. Tide mark to the rear board. A few lighter marks to the boards and spine. Small crack to the tail of the rear joint. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front joint and hinge are a little strained but remains firm. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Good
