Full contemporary calf, G. iv+576+[xxvi]pp+4pp publishers catalogue, binding very worn & rubbed with the leather parting from the boards at the corners, upper two compartments of the spine missing and both hinges held by the stout cords, internally a nice copy with good wide margins, occasional grubby mark, ink ownership signatures of Thomas Harris with one dated 1849. Comprehensive collection of precedents, presented so as to be used as templates, collected from the manuscripts & draughts of 'men of so great abilities' which pertain to conveyancing. 'Modern Precedents, so prepared and settled must be of great use, not only to Gentlemen of Estates, who desire to understand their own Family Settlements, but also to students and Practicers of the Law, who have not confined their thoughts chiefly to [Conveyancing]' (preface). The main source was Nathaniel Piggott [ 1661 - 1737 ] of whom it has been said 'in the conveyancing branch of the law his eminence was undisputed' [Kirk], his expertise called upon to preserve the estates of Roman Catholic families in light of the Glorious Revolution. The legal assistance he rendered to Alexander Pope was rewarded with Pope eulogising him in verse in 1727.
