About This Item

New York / Chicago / Minneapolis: New Era Publishing Co, 1903. First Edition. Hardcover. Good+. Small 4to. Pp. xix, 21-495, [8]. Illustrated with manuscript facsimiles and diagrams. Light grey waxed cloth, titles and illustration printed in black on the covers and spine. Front pastedown affixed with erasable household telephone directory blank printed on "Pyralin Slate," back pastedown pocket folder for pencil and clipping mucilage (contents absent,) front free endpaper with tipped-in "Fourteen New Features" printed in red, "Special note" printed in red and sample added recipe tipped in to first Cookery page, grey index tabs in cookery section. Verso of title page ink stamped "The Library of Congress Two Copies Received Apr 10 1903 Copyright Entry [ms] Apr 10, 1903..." and separately "The Library of Congress Surplus Duplicate." Front board bowed and scuffed, edges rubbed and corners bumped. Head edge dust-soiled, edges minimally age toned. Paperclip impression to top edge of title pages. Preliminaries soiled and short closed tears. One leaf detached from empty pocket folder. Leaves unmarked. This innovative cookbook and household manual "published for and sold to subscribers only by authorized solicitors" reflects the optimism and rationalism of the new American century. Household members and guests are encouraged to fill the deep margins with pasted clippings and written contributions. The Home Economics section includes "A Home-Made Telephone" any ingenious boy can make. And under "Curios," how to cook rice in Chinese and sample recipes in Turkish and Greek, each in manuscript facsimile.
