Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1932. Early Reprint. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Good+. 8vo. Pp. vii, [2], 257. Bibliography. Index. Bound in black cloth with lettering in relief within a bright pink block on the front board and spine. Slight dust soiling to top edge; remnant of US quarter-size label near upper hinge on rear pastedown. In the dust jacket that shows edge-wear and rubbing along folds. Price of $2.00 intact on front flap. Chase's influential Depression-era text calling for top-down economic regulation, concluding with the pithy question, "Why should the Soviets have all the fun remaking a world?" Whether the title of this book, also used in a New Republic article written by Chase, was adopted by FDR as the name for his broad spectrum of economy-saving programs is not confirmed. However, Roosevelt first used "new deal" in a speech the week that article was published. The scarce dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .

NY: Macmillan, 1932. reprint. Hardcover. Very Good/None. Hardcover, 257 pages. Later printing. Bound in black cloth boards with paper titles present to the spine and front board. Stuart Chase was an American economist and engineer trained at MIT. His writings covered topics as diverse as general semantics and physical economy. His hybrid background of engineering and economics places him in the same philosophical camp as R. Buckminster Fuller. Chase's thought was shaped by Henry George, Thorstein Veblen and Fabian socialism. Chase spent his early political career supporting "a wide range of reform causes: the single tax, women's suffrage, birth control and socialism." Chase's early books The Tragedy of Waste (1925) and Your Money's Worth (1928) were notable for their criticism of corporate advertising and their advocacy of consumer protection. Although not a Marxist, Chase admired the planned economy of the Soviet Union, being impressed with it after a 1927 visit. Chase stated that "The Russians, in…
