About This Item

Gedruckt bey Christoph Saur, auf Kosten vereinigter Freunden, Germantown: ., 1762 pp. xxxiii, [3] 760, [40]. Double column German Gothic letter text. 12mo. 190mm. Original polished full calf binding attributed to Christopher Hoffman, decoratively tooled in blind; With four original brass corner studs and two clasps. Small mounted ink on paper ownership of Abraham Kriebel (1736-1801) who lived near the Schwenkfelder Meeting House, Towamencin Township, Montgomery County, PA. In 1762 he married Sussanna Schultz (1740-1820). This fine book might have been a wedding present from his father Caspar (1701-1771). Top edge with light "C.K." ownership initials. Hard cover. Very good+. The first Schwenkfelder hymnal printed in America. It is organized into two main parts - one dealing with the Trinity, and the other with God's creation, and man's relationship to his Soverign King. The editor, Rev. Christopher Schultz took great care to annotate the hymn verses so that those who sang these texts would know the sources on which they were based. Very scarce - especially in such nice condition.. Hardcover.
