VG with no DJ. First edition. Ticknor & Co., Boston, 1889. Cloth. Original gray cover with lovely silver and red decoration and letter, frontispiece with tissue guard, all edges gilt, beveled covers, thick paper, one side with a black and white plate of an African-American scene of Virginia, the facing side with text and illustrations and decorations. Unpaginated. Illustrations by Charles Copeland, ornaments by Frank Myrick. Book is tight, covers are clean with light edge wear, no markings inside, pages clean, the only fault is the frontispiece was removed and reinserted in a semi-professional way, also the frontis piece has title of book written underneath, gummed label of the niece. These are not caricatures of blacks. From the Evelyn Foster Morneweck (niece of Stephen Foster) & Richard Foster(grandnephew of Stephen Foster) Estate collections,
