About This Item
Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1843. vii, 232pp. Bound in red morocco over marbled boards. Light wear to spine ends and
edges, but a very nice copy of one of Cooper's scarcer works.
Ned Myers was an early shipmate of Cooper's on the merchant vessel Stirling (Cooper spells it
Sterling in this work) in 1806-1807. This is Myers' biography. It's a fine piece of work by Cooper particularly the recounting of Myers' experiences on the 10-gun sloop Scourge on Lake Ontario in 1813. Scourge capsized during a storm on 8 August 1813. Of her 50-man complement only 16 survived, one of whom was Ned Myers.
"Ned Myers memoir offers an unparalleled view of seafaring on the lower deck." - Dr. William
(Bill) Dudley James Fenimore Cooper's Ned Myers: A Life Before the Mast (The American
Neptune, Vol. 57, No. 4, Fall 1997; pp. 323-329).
