Previously the Royal Navy had lost three cruisers and eight destroyers and the aircraft carrier Formidable was taken out of service because of damage as were five cruisers and seven destroyers. This accounted for half the Mediterranean Fleet. Also two thousand sailors were killed. Ironically the German’s success here, contributed to their defeat in Russia as the troops on Crete were then unavialable for the eastern front. A detailed description of the Battle of Crete and its aftermath.
