About This Item
NY: Pantheon, 1992. First edition. Hardcover. An association copy, inscribed on the half-title page in a handsome calligraphic script: "For Gary & Sharon, in comradely spirit of Zen, poesy, & wildness. Gary S. 4.III.93." The recipient was Gary Capshaw, who is thanked in the acknowledgments of Snyder's The Practice of the Wild: "I thank Gary Capshaw for the gift of the desk and his memories of Lew Welch." There are also several letters from Capshaw among Snyder's papers. Laid into this volume is an autographed note signed (ALS) on Snyder's personal stationary ("Shasta bioregion" in the address) that reads: "Hi guys -- At least I'm still writing poetry -- will teach again this spring. G." Browning to lowermost edge of the note. A very near fine book with a smidge of wear to lower board corners in very good or better jacket with some light creasing at spine ends and matching trace wear to lower corners. .

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
