Papillon's engrossing essays, written at various times and put together in this volume as - after the fashion of the time - an effort to dovetail science, metaphysics and philosophy into a higher understanding of life. Rather thoughtfully done, too. We try to do the same today, usually with less cohesion than this superior effort. See scans. L99
