This striking and original book from the author of 'Watership Down' and The Girl in the Swing' undoubtedly proves the truth of the author's assertion that "There is always something to enjoy in nature, even in January or November." The birds, animals and wild flowers of the Isle of Man are vividly described and brought before the reader's eye.Gilbert White of Selborne might well have recognized a kindred spirit in Richard Adams, who (accompanied by his faithful Welsh collie,Tetter) is out in all weathers, missing nothing of the pageant of the months, the seasons and even of the stars. The wide extent of his observation, which ranges from chance-encountered snails and beetles to seals, peregrine falcons and migrant seabirds, will engage every reader's interest by its sheer variety and keenness of vision. For him,the most ordinary day discloses something exciting. Not all his year, however, was spent on the Isle of Man.The diary includes fascinating accounts of expeditions to the Lake District,to Anglesey,Denmark,Australia and even London (where he found plenty of nature to record).Richard Adam's diary,in fact, demonstrates, daily and in detail, that for the true nature lover there can be no such thing as boredom. John Lawrence's delightful illustrations - each planned and sketched 'on the spot' in close co-operation with Richard Adams - complement the text with total veracity and form an integral part of this unusual and charming book. John Lawrence, born in Hastings,Sussex,1933,son of a company representative. Educated at the Salesian College,Cowley, Oxford. Studied at Hastings School of Art (1951-53) and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts under Gertrude Hermes (1955-57).Part-time lecturer at Maidstone College of Art (1958-60),Brighton College of Art (1960- 69) and Camberwell School of Art (since 1960).Book illustrator, book plate and press mark designer (e.g. for the Baselisk Press and Julia Macrae Books),relief printmaker. He is well known for his wood engravings in which he uses a wide range of tools to create elaborate effects of pattern and texture, giving emphasis to his forms by means of varied multiple outlines in white and black. He also works in pen and ink or pencil, sometimes with colour washes. His work has mainly been published by the Folio Society,Hamish Hamilton and Kestrel Books. Prize winner in the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award for both 1972 and 1977. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!
