About This Item
London: Cassell and Company, Limited, 1902. Leather. Near Fine. 8.5" by 6". Cherry Kearton. The popular edition of Richard Kearton's natural history book, with photographs by Cherry Kearton, in a lovely full calf binding. The popular edition of this work in a full calf binding with gilt detailing to the spine and the gilt crest of 'The Incorporated Thames Nautical Training College' to the front board. Marbled end papers and edges. Richard Kearton (1862-1928) and Cherry Kearton (1871-1940) were brothers who were both British naturalists. They developed innovative methods to photograph animals in the wild. This volume was their most famous work, as it was the first natural history book to be entirely illustrated by photographs in the wild, with 180 photographs taken by Cherry Kearton. This work is devoted to their excursions to remote places such as St. Kilda, and is scarce in the first edition. In a full calf binding. Externally very smart, with just some fading to the spine and marks to the rear board. Gilt remains bright. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, except for spotting to the first and last couple of pages. Near Fine
