EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1840 A fair copy of the scarcer second volume of Dogs in the original publisher's cloth binding. This volume covers the domestic breeds of dog (as well as some feral) and has additional plates. With 35 hand coloured plates and 4 plain plates - 3 of which were omitted from Dogs Vol I. With volume listing; half title; frontispiece portrait of Don Felix D'Azara; black and white vignette title page with portrait of 'Fury'; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; note of additional contents to be added to Vol 26 in the series (Bees); errata note for Bees; Memoir; text; errata; note on plates omitted from Vol I; and plates bound at the rear. The plates number to Plate 31 but there are several starred plates - bringing the total to 35 hand coloured. The binding is complete with gilt titles. It has some fading and pulling to the spine and is shaken. There is a little splitting of the cloth on the spine joints. The original green endpapers are present but beginning to split at the joint with the text block.A small portion of the rear pastedown endpaper is missing. The stitching is currently holding but looks weak. The contents are largely unopened and the plates are tissue guarded and exceptionally clean with nice bright colouring. There is the usual light brown toning to page edges. A nice copy of this scarce volume.
