An uncommonly pretty copy of a work first published in 1789 by the brother of the Parson-Naturalist Gilbert White, in print in over 300 different editions, this being a Fifth Edition, a lovely example of 19th-century trade binding, and with added association value (see below). This edition of the classic work revised the Standard Edition of E.T. Bennett and was revised here further and with additional notes by James Edmund Harting. Preface to the Fourth Edition included, from the publisher. Published by Warne, 1887, and then, as the title page notes, With Ten Letters Not Included In Any Other Edition Of This Work, to and from Gilbert White and Robert Marsham. Sturdy, tightly bound, clean and unmarked of interior. Handsomely decorative green cloth and with fairly stunning gilt illustrations and lettering to cover and spine, depicting a bat, a mouse, a muskrat, reeds, a bird, an owl, and a snail. Protected in a Mylar dusk jacket. Illustrated throughout with the engravings of Thomas Bewick and others, with engravings and six plates in color, 58 plates altogether, collated and present. Bumping to and light scuffing of spine head and foot. Gilt edges all around. Black-and-white engraved headers, initials and even some historiated initials. Bookplate of Tracy Irwin Storer inside front flap (!), he being an American zoologist known for his contributions to the wildlife of California and the ecology of the Sierra Nevada.
