About This Item

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1893. First Edition. 309pp; green cloth, Sarah Wyman Whitman trade binding design with stylized flowering tree front panel, title in gilt on elongated trunk, the tree's roots enclosing the author's name. A tiny bit of rubbing to bottom of spine, endpapers sunned at edges, early owner's pencil signature on ffep, else a very good + copy. This is a selection of nine short stories about Jewett's native Maine. Published just three years before her masterpiece, THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS, these stories show Jewett as a confident and mature writer. Long seen as a minor voice of the local color school, she is now regarded as an American master whose writing influenced Kate Chopin, Willa Cather and others well into the 20th century. BAL 10902. Allen and Gullans, p. 103.
