About This Item

Boston: J.W. Black & Co. VG 5.5"x4" photo taken by J W Black. Photo a bit over exposed.. 1880-94. VG photo of an older Banks in civilian clothes. Banks was a Civil War general and a Massachusetts politician. . Wikipedia on Black & Banks. Black had several important photos to his credit. His 1859 photo of John Brown is in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. His 1860 Walt Whitman photo was used in the 1860 edition of 'Leaves of Grass'. He made the first aerial photo from Samuel Arthur King's balloon 'Queen of the Air'. His was the first aerial photo of Boston. Banks was a MA politician with no military background. Nevertheless Lincoln made him a general. Pretty much a failure as a soldier he was respected as a good administrator. He was active in MA politics and became somewhat liberal later in his life. He supported women's right to vote. Nothing on the photo's backing states it is Banks abd most on line images of Banks are from the Civil War era. Still, this certainly him, tho likely from closer to his death in 1894. Quiet Friends has two Banks CDVs listed in ABE. Search 'CDV' for author and 'Banks' for title. .
