About This Item

Sydney, Potts Point: Hordern House Rare Books, 2014. Hardback wide octavo, dustjacket (with flaps, nautical chart reverse side), pale blue paper covered boards, beige cloth spine, very good plus condition (in very good plus dustjacket), few sepia (brown-tinted) drawings. 134 pp. This is the long over-looked account of the notorious wreck of HMS Porpoise on the southern fringe of the Great Barrier Reef in 1803. This narrative of the wreck is now revealed as written by a junior officer on Matthew Flinders' HMS Investigator, Surgeon's Mate Robert Purdie (1780 - 1815). The narrative was originally published in eight parts in the Naval Chronicle in 1799 - 1818. This book has a new introduction and notes by Matthew Fishburn. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the July 1814 publication of Matthew Flinders' "Voyage to Terra Australis”.
