About This Item

"A Narrative of the VISIT TO THE AMERICAN CHURCHES by the Deputation from the Congregational Union of England and Wales" by Andrew Reed and James Matheson. 1835 1st edition; Harper & Brothers; New York. Complete set in two volumes. The book chronicles the extensive travels through the American Northeast observing camp meetings, Shakers and Hicksites, female academies, colleges, and centers of all denominations. Comments are made on slavery and anti-slavery societies, impressions of stagecoach travel, inns, manners and "The Kentucky Squeeze." An unusual and scarce account of early American travel.

Here are more examples from the contents: Passage to New York; Whig Celebration; Journey to Washington; President's House &c.; Slave Pen; Mount Vernon; Family of Washington; Journey to Philadelphia; Penn's Monument; Quakers; Departure for Boston; Old South Meeting; Plymouth Rock; Burial Ground; Shaker Settlements; Niagara; Account of Revival; Log Huts; Prairies; Storm in the Forest; Mormonites; Fourth of July; Declaration of Independence; Temperance Meeting; Sabbath at Lexington; African Church; Slave Auction; Cotton Factory; Lake Winnipiseogee; Orphan Asylum; Bible Meeting...and much, much more.

Condition:
The cloth has faded along the perimeter of the covers; light stains on the covers. Some chipping to the cloth at the top of the vol 1 spine. Cloth tears along the left edge of the vol 1 spine. There is a split at the top of the spine at the back of vol 2 between the last text page and the end paper...despite the split, the back cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky. All front/back covers are firmly attached. Consistent foxing to the pages throughout both volumes; heavy foxing to the end papers and pastedowns. The rear end paper of vol 2 is partially affixed to the facing pastedown. Old name written in pencil on the vol 1 end paper. Overall the set is in Fair condition.
