Lamar, segundo presidente de Texas, conocido por un sentimiento nacionalista, estuvo en contra de la anexión de Texas a Estados Unidos y buscó empoderar Texas conquistando los territorios mexicanos del norte hasta llegar al océano Pacífico. Su principal proyecto expansionista fue "La expedición de Santa Fe" que se encargaría de incursionar en territorio de Nuevo México hasta su capital e independizarlo de manera pacifica. La expedición fue un verdadero caos.
