About This Item

New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good+. 8vo. Pp. [i-iv], v-xxii, 1-217. With a map reproduced from Mitchell's New Map of Texas, Oregon and California (1846). Full seafoam green cloth with lettering stamped on spine in black. Lower spine and a good section of rear cover with a bleached dampstain, not affecting dust jacket, nor rear pastedown or endpapers (please see photo). In the decorative color dust jacket with a chip at the head of spine and two closed tears on rear panel. First printing, with a variant binding from that described by Tweney. Despite the stain and dust jacket afflictions, the book retains shelf appeal due to the brightness of the dust jacket. Please see photos. Includes an account of the Whitman massacre, trading with Native Americans on Puget Sound, and Hancock's pursuit of farming on Whidbey Island, where he settled. His overland account was used by Bancroft in chapter XIX of "The History of Oregon." SMITH, 4027. SOLIDAY I:1015, TWENEY 89, 26. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable clear, archival sleeve.
