About This Item
London: J. Snow, 1838. Sixth Thousand . Green Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo Large (over 7¾" - 9¾"). N/a. 1 (ad.) xx, 590pp. 1838. Sixth Thousand. 8vo. large sized. A good only copy of an important work on travel in and around the south sea islands in the earlier part of the nineteenth century. Bound in original publisher's blue-green cloth - gilt embossed to the spine (the cloth re-backed to the spine). Bound in finely ribbed cloth with a blind stamped decorative vignette to both the front and rear boards. Frontispiece of John Williams, an engraved title page, a colour frontispiece, a map and 6 other steel engraved plates - all as called for. No inscriptions. New cream coloured endpapers. The original binder's cloth slightly mottled to the spine and to the front board and shelf worn more generally with the fairly usual loss to the corners. Notable spotting to the frontispiece, title page and colour frontispiece - the map largely free from it. The other engraved plates spotted too - otherwise the texblock is largely free from it. Some rounding to the page corners - probably caused by usage to the front of the book. 6 leaves with very short tears or nicks to one margin and some associated light creasing. The odd very scatterd (and not heavy) soil mark. Slight loss of text to the final page cuased by the new binder's glue causing some offsetting of this top paper layer & text to the new endpaper - sloppy! A good only tight copy of an early printing (just one year after the first) - still a pleasure to hold and read.
